We designed a database based system for them that allowed them to cost products, relate those to individual customers and view and print master specification sheets complete with full pricing history, product amendments, raw material price history, machine manufacturing limits and much more. The cost was less than a third of what a proprietary software application cost and they ended up with a product that exactly matched their needs. What's more, we work with the customer and continue to make changes and add to the system as their business needs change, something they simply would not get with off the shelf proprietary software.
In another instance an agricultural group needed a system that offered full traceability from field, through picking, QC, packing, despatch and right into store. This was achieved and the system also interfaces with hand held PDA's, and their accounting system to provide a completely integrated business management and quality assurance tool.
